Sometimes you just need a change of pace with your workouts. Maybe they get boring or you lose a little motivation to go do them. After only hosting a Saturday bootcamp for many years I decided to throw a curveball at everyone and add a new challenge. That is how I got the idea for a Sunday boot camp called, “What Are You Made Of?”

Blogs in this category, will have a motivational theme and message, that will be accompanied by a challenging workout. These workouts are purposely designed to be a little harder than your normal weekly workouts.

Hard workouts will help you increase your mental strength just as much as your physical strength, and it will translate to your job, your family, and your fitness. We are forced to face obstacles and challenges everyday. When obstacles show up in our lives, we have 2 choices...we can overcome the obstacle or we can let the obstacle overcome us. Everytime you choose to dig a little deeper and push through hard challenges you grow stronger.

This blog is created to help you find the answer to one question, “What are you made of?”

Welcome to the You ~vs~ You Blog Challenge!

In the "You vs. You Challenge," we embrace the powerful belief that fitness is not a competition with others, but rather a personal journey of growth and self-improvement. The focus here is on striving to be a better version of yourself than you were yesterday. Each day presents a new opportunity to break through barriers, achieve new personal records (PRs), and redefine what you thought was possible.

These blogs will kick off with a motivational message that inspires you to reflect on your progress and the importance of beating yesterday’s version of yourself. This challenge encourages you to push your limits and see how far you can go, both physically and mentally.

Following the motivational message, you will be given a "You vs. You" workout challenge. In this circuit, you’ll work independently, tracking your performance as you complete various exercises. Whether it's recording the weight you lifted, the time it took to finish the circuit, or the number of repetitions you accomplished within a set timeframe, each measurement is a step toward your personal best.

As part of your extra homework assignment, you’ll revisit this circuit on your own in the coming week, with the goal of improving your previous scores. By focusing on your individual progress, you not only enhance your fitness but also cultivate a mindset centered on resilience and self-motivation. Remember: it’s about the journey, and every effort counts!

By participating in the "You vs. You Challenge," you’re not just working out; you’re embracing a lifestyle of self-improvement and empowerment. Each time you step up to the challenge, you’re not only honoring your commitment to fitness but also reinforcing the belief that the only limits that exist are the ones you place on yourself. So gear up, get ready to challenge yourself, and let’s make every workout a personal victory!

Meet Walter, our beloved golden retriever mascot and the embodiment of joy, fitness, and community spirit at The Fitness Pivot! ️‍♂️

Walter has been an integral part of our fitness family for over six years, first as the official mascot of Priority Fitness and now proudly holding the title of The Fitness Pivot Mascot. His duties are simple yet vital: greeting clients with enthusiasm, spreading joy, and ensuring everyone feels motivated and supported during their workouts. With a wagging tail and a playful spirit, he brings a special energy that lights up our community!

Walter is not just a mascot; he’s a fitness enthusiast! This active pup loves to explore the great outdoors, whether it’s jogging through the fallen leaves in the fall, splashing around in the rain, or even attempting to walk on the treadmill (he’s still working on that!). On vacations, you can find him running stairs and swimming, always eager to join in on the fun.

While Walter may have a dramatic flair when he doesn’t get his way, his heart is always in the right place. A dedicated Kansas City sports fan, he has a collection of Chiefs and Royals toys that bring him endless joy. He is a true people-lover, always ready to share a paw-shake and a head pat with our gym members.

Walter has his own inspiring fitness story that he loves to share, and although he is not a certified trainer, he has developed a wealth of knowledge the last 10 years as Chad’s 1st assistant.

            Welcome to

           Lessons From The Field

, a blog series where I share valuable insights derived from my lifelong passion for sports and fitness. Growing up as a sports enthusiast, I learned that the playing field is not just a place for competition; it's a classroom filled with life lessons that extend far beyond the game.

In each edition of this email, I’ll draw upon sports analogies that have shaped my understanding of perseverance, resilience, and personal growth. Just like athletes review their performance through game film, we’ll reflect on our own journeys, identifying areas for improvement and celebrating our victories.

Whether it’s the concept of "perfect practice makes perfect," which teaches us the importance of honing our skills with intention, or the idea of "getting back to basics" when we face challenges, these lessons are applicable in both fitness and life. We’ll explore the significance of having a “short memory”—the ability to let go of mistakes and move forward with renewed focus—just like a goldfish that swims on, unburdened by past errors.

By intertwining sports with fitness, I aim to inspire you to harness these lessons in your own life. Together, we’ll uncover how the discipline, teamwork, and mental toughness cultivated on the field can empower us to become our best selves in every aspect of our lives.

Join me as we embark on this journey of reflection, growth, and empowerment through the lens of sports. Each email will serve as a reminder that the lessons learned in the field can lead to triumphs in fitness and life. Let’s lace up our shoes, reflect on our game films, and apply these lessons to become stronger, healthier, and more resilient individuals!

Slaying Your Donuts, began as a halftime break during my bootcamp called, Prime Time. While attendees were catching a quick breather from the workout, I would address the unexpected challenges that life throws your way during your fitness journey. Inspired by a chapter from my book,

How To Be A Donut Slayer

, this section focuses on recognizing and preparing for the inevitable curveballs—those pesky "donuts" that can derail even the best-laid plans.

Just as we anticipate certain obstacles in our fitness routines, we must also acknowledge that donuts—unforeseen challenges—will pop up. These are the moments that can throw a wrench into our schedules and test our commitment to fitness. Whether it’s the bad weather donut, where you plan to run in the morning only to be met with pouring rain, or the sick kid donut, where a call from school disrupts your workout plans, these situations are part of the journey.

In the Slaying Donuts Blog, I will address common challenges and strategize effective ways to overcome them. The key is to remain adaptable and keep fitness a priority, no matter what life throws at you. In this blog I’ll explore various Plan B options for when these donuts appear. For instance, if the rain keeps you from your morning run, will you switch to an indoor cardio workout? Or if you’re stuck at home caring for a sick child, how can you integrate movement into your day, perhaps with a quick bodyweight workout or a family activity?

Being a donut slayer means refusing to let these curveballs dictate your path. It’s about pivoting, staying focused, and finding creative solutions to maintain your fitness momentum. By the end of this session, you’ll not only feel more prepared for the unexpected but also empowered to tackle any challenge with a resilient mindset. Let’s embrace the unpredictability of life and transform those donuts into opportunities for growth and success!

In the Heart Of A Champion posts, I will share a short but inspiring message about perseverance and resilience. We all need that from time to time on both our fitness journey and in life. Then I will shift gears and share a workout challenge that focuses on one of the most vital components of fitness: cardiovascular strength.

Most workout circuits are designed with intervals of work and rest, allowing for recovery and preparation for the next set. However, in the heart of a champion, I’m going to challenge you to push through with less recovery time, maintaining a higher heart rate for an extended period—typically around six minutes.

This circuit is less about isolated strength training and more about cultivating the strength of your heart, both physically and mentally. We’ll keep the intensity high, ensuring that your heart is working hard as we dive into exercises that mirror the relentless spirit of athletes in one of the most grueling sports—wrestling.

Wrestling matches consist of three periods, each lasting two minutes, culminating in a total of six minutes of intense competition. It’s often said that the third period is where champions are made, as it is a true test of endurance, determination, and sheer willpower. This concept serves as a powerful metaphor for the challenges we face in life. Just as wrestlers dig deep in that final stretch, we too must harness our inner strength when confronted with stressful situations, tight deadlines, or moments that push us beyond our comfort zones.

In "The Heart of a Champion" circuit, you’ll be encouraged to embrace this mentality. Each exercise will push you to your limits and require you to tap into your resilience. As your heart races and the burn intensifies, remember that this is where growth happens. Only those with the heart of a champion will thrive, not just in the gym but in every aspect of their lives.

The Excuse Beatdown, began as a halftime break during my bootcamp called, Prime Time. While attendees were catching a quick breather from the workout, I would address annoying obstacles and mental barriers that often hold us back on our fitness journey. Just like in a football or basketball game, where teams regroup and strategize during halftime, I would take this time to make some adjustments to help them win in the second half. This will be the blog version of that experience.

I firmly believe that "an excuse is just an obstacle that you haven’t overcome yet." We all face challenges daily, and when we encounter these obstacles, we have two choices: we can either find a way to overcome them or allow them to defeat us. In each Excuse Beatdown blog, I’ll dive deep into a common excuse that I have seen many clients struggle with over my years as a trainer. The first step is recognizing what isn’t working; after all, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results. It’s time to let go of ineffective habits and embrace the idea of pivoting to Plan B.

Sometimes, the obstacles may seem insurmountable, but it's vital to remember that no challenge is truly impossible. The most powerful resource you possess to conquer these hurdles is your own mind. Take a step back and then look at the obstacle with fresh eyes, and make a new plan of attack.

The goal of the Excuse Beatdown is to empower you to discover a new way forward—one that replaces excuses with determination and action. Let’s beat down the obstacles that are in our way and emerge stronger, more resilient, and ready to take them on with a new plan of attack.
